How can I get EMA?

Dividing Line

If you think you qualify you need to:

  • think about what course you want to do and where you want to study;
  • set up a bank or building society current account if you haven’t already;
  • complete the application form;
  • wait for a letter saying you are accepted onto EMA;
  • sign a Learning Agreement with your school or college.

You will get payments when we get confirmation from your college that you are attending.

If your application is not accepted you will be sent a letter telling you why not.

Your course

If your age and household income mean you can get EMA, you need to make sure your course does.
You need to start or stay at a participating school or college in Wales, on a course that is:

  • an academic or vocational course up to and including Level 3, and;
  • full-time at school, or;
  • a minimum of 12 guided hours at college.

Eligible academic and vocational courses include, GCSE’s, ‘A’ Levels, BTEC, NVQ, GNVQ and Basic Skills courses. They must last at least 10 weeks.

You don’t need to know exactly what course you will take when you apply, but the course must be ‘eligible’.

If you change your school or college, you must tell the EMA Customer Services Team. Look here for how to contact us.

The Application Form

Got EMA last year?

If you got EMA last year and are going into your 2nd year, we will send you an application form straight to your house. If this will be your 3rd or 4th year of EMA, we will send you a letter. If this isn’t received in the spring, please contact us.

You should also read these if you have already applied for EMA, but your household has 'allowable deductions' taken into account for tax purposes.
