When can I get EMA?

Dividing Line

You can start getting EMA payments as soon as you start your course, as long as you:

  • apply on time;
  • agree and sign a Learning Agreement with your school or college; and
  • meet your attendance requirements.

Once we approve your application your school or college need to confirm you have attended. Then payments will be made to your bank or building society account fortnightly.

Learning Agreement

If you are accepted for EMA, once you start your course, you must sign a Learning Agreement with someone from your school or college. This Learning Agreement covers all attendance and performance rules set by your school or college. You must meet these in order to receive your weekly allowance and bonuses.

Expected Payment Dates

The payment dates are based on courses starting on 1 September 2009. If your course starts after this date then your payments may differ from those shown but you will still be paid every 2 weeks.

* Please note, payments are only made if you are in attendance and you will not be paid if you are on holiday.

Bonus Payments

There are two kinds of bonuses you could get.

If you achieve your learning objectives you will get performance bonus payments. These will normally be paid in January and July, once your school or college confirm you meet the conditions.

If you got EMA last year, return to school or college for a second or third year and still qualify for EMA, you could get a further bonus.

When Should I Apply?

For courses running between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009.

You've missed the deadline. We needed all applications for courses running between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009, before 31 August 2009.

If you applied within 8 weeks of the start of your course, back dated payments can sometimes be made:

  • If we got your application by 31 October 2009 you could get payments back-paid since the start of the term.
  • If we got your application after 31 October 2009 you will start getting payments the first full week after we got your form.

For courses running between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010

At the very latest, we need to get your form by 31 August 2010.

Apply as soon as the forms become available. This should be around springtime.

If you got EMA last year you should try and get your form to us before June 2009. It's never too early to apply but it can be too late.

If your form is not received within 8 weeks of starting your course you may lose out on back dated EMA payments.
