Navigation aids

The home page and all subsequent pages include search functionality to search the sites content.

The Main sections of the site are accessed via coloured ‘Lozenge’ navigation bars on the homepage. Subsequent sub pages of these main sections are also linked using Lozenge bars. Sub pages that are ‘child’ pages of a top level page, use sub page navigation links on the left hand navigation panel, where appropriate.

Links

Many links have title attributes which describe the link in greater detail, unless the text of the link already fully describes the target (such as the headline of an article). Wherever possible, links are written to make sense out of context. Many browsers (such as JAWS, Home Page Reader, Lynx, and Opera) can extract the list of links on a page and allow the user to browse the list, separately from the page. link text is never duplicated; two links with the same link text always point to the same address.

There are no "javascript:" pseudo-links. All links can be followed in any browser, even if scripting is turned off.

There are no links that open new windows without warning.

Hints and Tips

Setting the font size - IE 5.0 and above

When using a screen reader it is always best to make the font as small as possible. This stops the text from wrapping which allows the screen reader to read it more easily.

  • Under the View menu there is the option Text sizes.
  • Change the size to Smallest from the submenu.

Use the following procedure to change the fonts IE 5.0 and above:

  1. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu.
  2. The Internet Options dialogue box is displayed.
  3. Click the Fonts button.
  4. The system displays the Fonts dialogue box.
  5. Select the Web page font and the Plain text font as required.
  6. Click the OK button to close the Fonts dialogue box.
  7. Click the Accessibility button.
  8. The Accessibility dialogue box is displayed.
  9. Select the relevant "ignore" options to force your preferences over the web page settings.
  10. Click the OK button to close the Accessibility dialogue box.
  11. Click the OK button to close the Internet Options dialogue box.

Setting the fonts - NN 4.0 and above

Use the following procedure to change the fonts in Netscape Navigator Version 4 and above:

  1. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  2. The Preferences dialogue box is displayed.
  3. Select the Fonts option in the field on the left-hand side.
  4. Select the family and size of the Variable Width Font and the Fixed Width Font as required.
  5. You can also choose the following options:
    • Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts. (This option uses only the fonts that you have selected).
    • Use document specified fonts, but disable Dynamic Fonts. (This option uses the fonts specified by the web page, but only if they exist on your system).
    • Use document-specified fonts, including Dynamic Fonts. (This option uses the fonts specified by the web page and will download them if they are not available on your system).
  6. Click the OK button to close the dialogue box.
