Change to student finance in 2010

Tuition Fees

From September 2010 universities and colleges in Wales, England and Northern Ireland will be able to charge tuition fees up to a maximum of £3,290 a year.

Students who normally live in Wales and study in the UK

For new students from academic year 2010/11:

  • The full Assembly Learning Grant/Special Support Grant will be £5,000.
  • The household income threshold for partial Assembly Learning Grant will be £50,020.
  • There is no Tuition Fee Grant available
  • Extra Tuition Fee Loan is available to ensure no full-time undergraduate student will have to pay up-front fees.
  • Students who take out a Maintenance Loan may receive up to £1,500 partial cancellation of debt when they enter repayment.

For continuing students in academic year 2010/11:

  • Students who take out a Maintenance Loan may receive up to £1,500 partial cancellation of debt when they enter repayment.

Students who normally live in Wales and study in Wales

Tuition Fee Grant

  • From September 2010 a grant of up to £1,980 will be available to continuing students only who normally live in Wales and who started a higher education course at a Welsh college from academic year 2006/07 to 2009/10, This tuition fee grant is available regardless of family income, and is paid directly to the place of study.

Bursaries

  • Welsh Bursary Scheme: Universities and colleges in Wales are committed to providing additional support for students under the Welsh Bursary Scheme. Every full-time higher education student who started their first year of higher education on or after 1 September 2007 regardless of where they come from in the UK, will be considered for a means tested Welsh Bursary. For continuing students the minimum Welsh Bursary will be £329. For new students the bursary rate will be subject to decision regarding the revised National Bursary Framework for Wales.
  • Similar arrangements to the Welsh Bursary Scheme, above, are in place elsewhere in the UK. Ask your chosen college for details.
